Sigma’s latest range of game changers
Ok, the title might be a little “click-baity” but there is probably some truth in it. We know from previous reviews that their current range of Art, Sport and Contemporary lenses are exquisitely made and performance wise, have been some of the best available on the market. I think I may even have used the phrase “game changer” in the past more than once!
Sigma’s latest range appear, on first impressions, to be no different. They have announced 4 new lenses, and have got a lot of people talking after just a few hours. So what do we have on the way:
14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art
I’m going to say it again… Game changer!! No one else offers something that wide and that fast. If the lens is sharp and keeps coma aberrations under control, it will be THE go to lens for astro-photographers. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
135mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art
A portrait photographers dream. The perfect focal length, with a wide aperture giving the ability to blow that background to smithereens. A metal construction is more than likely based on other art lenses, but based on other art lenses, I’d anticipate it to be a weighty one.
24-70 f/2.8 DG OS HSM Art
A focal range that everyone should carry in their bag. Incredibly versatile and sporting a great wide aperture. Granted, this focal length and aperture are nothing new; Canon, Nikon, even Sigma have been offering this lens for years, but it’s nice to see a revamped version, and the addition of OS is welcomed.
100-400 f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary
Another welcomed addition. Canon has had this market of super-tele all to themselves for some time with their mk1 and recent mk2 100-400 lenses. Sigma have the 150-600 range but they are big and bulky lenses, this promises to offer a decent level of zoom in a more compact package. Being a Contemporary lens, I’d speculate a plastic construction and splash resistance, but at a much more sensible weight.
Details are very vague at the moment, and there are no words on prices as yet, but I have no doubt more details will emerge soon!
